Sound

Diegetic sound is sound that you can hear coming from the diegesis. Diegesis is the film world that the audience see on the screen. A prime example of this would be the fantasy world from the lord of the rings, it's not real but any sound that could be made from that fantasy would be a diegetic sound.

An example of this in lord of the rings: return of the king is the scene with the mumakil in which the sounds they are making is a good form of diegetic sound coming from the diegesis as in the creature making the noise is not real but is still making the noise which we can hear.

Non-Diegetic this is where there's sound coming from a scene but is not actually coming from the diegesis. The most common uses of this are narration, soundtracks and montages, although the audience can hear these things, characters and things in the diegesis cannot.

An example of this is in David Fincher's The Social Network in the scene where Mark Zuckerberg hacks into the profiles of the colleges around him to help create facebook. The scene contains endless narration from Zuckerberg and a fast beat soundtrack over the top of the scene. These two sounds the audience can obviously hear but not see where they are coming from therefore making the sounds non diegetic.

Mood and meaning

The mood and meaning of a scene in a film can be decided and amplified by the soundtrack giving a desired feeling to a scene for example a action packed scene will usually use a fast pace soundtrack and the opposite for vice verse. An example of this is this fight scene from the Expendables http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VKAggGisCc
As soon as the first punch is thrown a fast paced tense soundtrack starts that gets the viewers excited and more engaged in the scene and giving the scene more energy.

Juxtaposition with a soundtrack can also be used to create mood and meaning, juxtaposition in a soundtrack is when the soundtrack is completely opposite to what you would expect to create mood and meaning such as a fast paced soundtrack to dull scene. An example of this being used is in reservoir dogs during this scene http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIMg2Xw4_8s
This is a serious dark scene in which someone is getting their ear cut off however there’s a comedic song being played creating a psychotic feeling and a better glimpse of what the character is like.

Foley

When filming a scene the most important sound to get is the dialogue and most of the time it would be too hard to get other sounds as well as the dialogue so instead they will use Foley. Foley is where a Foley artist creates sounds in a studio and then uses them in the film, for example sensitive sounds such as footsteps will be too quiet to hear so they have to be done in a studio.

An example of this being used is in the first few seconds of this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpdNPsUnDqU

it shows the sounds that were used for a horse running with someone riding it from the film Robin Hood and  it shows how realistic the sounds are and how needed they are.
